U206 Sailors took a pride in their sea-chests, often painting a picture of a ship inside the lid and fitting them with strong ornamental rope handles. T68 This impressive Pennsylvania miniature walnut York Co. Blanket Chest circa 1770-1780 in early old surface. The construction of this Chest is dovetailed case with a beautifully applied base, ogee molding on top of base, the lid has a nice molded edge on all four sides. The Chest is all walnut with the exception of the bottom board which is poplar.

With two hearts on the top, and painted in one of the hearts is a salior, and it looks like a Girl painted in the other one, and a Lady,( which may be the Girl friend herself) painted one ends of the Box. On the other end is a bowl of apples, which must have been his favorite fruit, the front is a painting of a river and trees, on the back is the poem of Mary had a little lamb but he got Mary's goat, so Mary skinned the little Lamb and made herself a coat.The lamb was small and Mary tall the coat was Rather short but Mary said she would fix it like a right good sport.Now Mary wants . The remainder of the poem is unreadable .From and private Estate in Lancaster PA. the construction of the box is nailed, all original , showing wear to the paint, this is a great piece of American Folk Art 8" long x m5 1/4" wide x 4 1/2
