This is a rare date on a sword as most were shipped to the state of Virginia prior to the start of the war.
Maker-mark (reverse ricasso): "AMES MFG CO./ CHICOPEE/ MASS. No US inspection marking as all other Ames swords used by the Union.  (obverse ricasso): "1860". Blade is near fine condition with only a few small nicks,  Washer present w/moderate wear. Hilt assembly tight,  many experts believe those sabers sent by the War Department to the state of Virginia on the eve of the war, just in time to be confiscated and put into the hands of Confederate cavalry.
