K37 Early 19th century hand wrought Sampler with two sets of alphabets in varying stitch styles with a very intricate floral and vine outer border and detailed inner border and row dividers. The blues, greens, ecru and tans are hand stitched onto a linen background. The maker stitched: “Eliza Johnson Dennys'es work aged 8 years Aprile the 25th 1824" along the bottom rows, along with a central verse with flowers on each side. The verse reads: "Teach me to feel another's woe, To hide the fault I see, That mercy I to others show, That mercy show to me". (This is a verse by English Poet, Alexander Pope.) The sampler is encased within an early wooden frame with remnants of gold paint.
Overall Frame size measures: 14" wide x 18 ½” tall. Sampler opening measures: 12 ½” wide x 17" tall.
