M67 Diorama of two Canvasback ducks in a serene snow-covered natural streamside setting. The Drake (male) and Hen (female) are both in flight, with wings in position of preparing to land. Frame bears scant remnants of original blue paint. Signed on back "Original by R.G. Rodell – Canvas Back". Extremely detailed in the decoy carvings, as well as the setting depicted around them. Maker is known to use balsa wood for his carvings and curved backgrounds and he incorporates a hand oil-painted background with dried live plant materials to create a natural vegetation setting for his decoy creations. Circa late1930's.
Overall dimensions of the diorama are 14 ¾” tall x 12 ¾” wide and the beautiful oak case is 3 3/8" deep. The viewing area (glass) measures 9 5/8” tall x 7 ½” wide.
NOTE: Runar Gustav (R.G.) Rodell of Wilmette, Illinois was born in Sweden in 1898, moved to the U.S.A. in his thirties and opened a studio around 1935 in Wilmette, IL before finally settling in Prescott, AZ around 1950. He passed away in 1983. It is believed all of his work from Prescott, AZ included a paper label on back, whereas the work from Wilmette, IL was simply signed on back.
